The Game of LIFE

Monopoly

Rack-o

Rummikub (like the card game rummy, but with tiles instead of cards)

Lie, Cheat, and Steal

Scattegories

Phase 10 Dice

Mil Bourne

etc.
Risk was one of my favorites as a kid (very much a boy's game).

Clue and Monopoly were also favorites - but need several players (at least 3) to be most fun

Others I really enjoyed that you have not mentioned:

- Mother's Helper

- Pit (needs at least 4 people for it to be fun, very fun with 7 or so people)

- Mille Bornes (sp?) - best with 3 or 4

- Sorry

- Parcheesi

- Scrabble

As I recall, we were only moderately entertained by Masterpiece. Chess and checkers have the problem that different skill levels (usually corresponding to age) make the game much less interesting for siblings.

Chess of course, it is simply great. For others chess is sports, science and art combined. There are is reason why millions are at stake at world chess championship. There is reason why thousand books have been written about chess. There is reason why millions of people play chess around the world. Because as I told, chess is great.

Base on experience teach well a kids on the concepts of chess(not only the rules), and they will love and play chess for the rest of their life. Sample of chess concept is bad bishop, fork and weak pawns.
Wheel of Fortune, Candyland, Monopoly.
