James Watson and Francis Crick are generally regarded as the two chief scientists who established the double-helix structure of DNA, but much of their work was based on the x-ray crystallography of Rosalind Franklin.



Franklin developed cancer and died before the Nobel Prize was awarded to Watson and Crick - and Nobel Prizes are not awarded post-humously - so she did not garner the same accolades as Watson and Crick. Some say that the misogynistic nature of the scientific establishment also worked to rob Franklin of her due.



The Nobel Prize was also shared by Maurice Wilkins, who was another X-ray crystallographer, and peer of Franklin's, whose work was instrumental in determining the structure of DNA.

A female chemical physicist Rosalind Franklin was just as responsible, if not MORE responsible for discovering the structure of DNA. They used some of her information without her knowledge, and she was never given the credit she deserved.

Franklin, discovered the shape of DNA from her x-rays however, she really did not know what they related to.



Watson and Crick who had been working on the shape of DNA had many theories of how DNA carried all of it information. Once Watson and Crick saw Franklins picture they realised that DNA has a double helix and this proved to fit all nucleotides etc in place.



Watson and Crick in my opinion did discover the structure but would not have without the intelligent Franklins hard work.
